Pirozzolo: Auburn school district addressing cost, safety concerns with turf proposal

Our turf committee has conducted and reviewed extensive research on the safety of crumb rubber infill, but we still have not found any documentation or conclusive evidence proving that it is unsafe. We have found that crumb rubber infill is the most widely-used infill in synthetic turf fields because it is durable, high-performing and low-cost, providing shock absorption, traction and foot stability. Over 98 percent of all synthetic turf fields in the world use crumb rubber for the infill. Crumb rubber has been critically examined and studied since the late 1980s, and more than 60 independent and credible studies have validated the safety of synthetic turf with crumb rubber infill. There is no research that directly links crumb rubber exposure to cancer.
